Approaching the WI capitol in the snow
There’s enough going on in the world right now to make one’s head spin. From Egypt to Libya, from Bahrain to Yemen, and now from Wisconsin to Indiana and Ohio, the news of mass protests, revolutions, and class struggle is flowing at too fast a rate to keep up with it all.
Luckily, as this past holiday weekend came to a close, I was able to get away from the dizzying deluge of news at my desk and get right into the thick of things. I took 24 hours and ventured into the heart of what has become an old-fashioned, multi-state Midwestern labor battle: Madison, Wisconsin.
The story of new Republican Governor Scott Walker trying to take away collective bargaining rights from public sector unions, and the unions’ response of daily mass protests and an indefinite sit-in at the state capitol, should be a familiar story by now. What was so refreshing was getting the stories of ordinary Wisconsinites themselves, and seeing their creativity and energy in action as they collectively organize to try to stop the bill, SB11.
I tried to record these stories, and my impressions of the day, as best I could via constant posts to Twitter. What follows is a slightly edited version of almost everything I posted during that 24-hour time period. I believe it gives a pretty good sense of what the scene is like on the ground there.
The only liberties I took were to correct some spelling (Fon du Lac not Fondilac), and limited clarifications of grammar and punctuation (it is Twitter after all). I also added rough estimates of times, since Twitter doesn’t record this info.
I will be writing up a more polished piece describing my experience and analysis as soon as possible. But for now, scroll down to the bottom and read from the bottom up! Enjoy!!!

I disagree with any sort of concessions. Also worried that labor leaders not fully thinking thru possible need to take more militant action
22 Feb

At least they can’t do it without some serious shenanigans
22 Feb
»
By law they have 2 give 24 hour notice to put a point on senate agenda. So seemingly that means they can’t put bill to vote in pieces tmrw
22 Feb

Only two things officially published online on senate agenda for tmrw: packers celebration, and an ag tax credit extension. #wiunion
22 Feb

There is very real ACTION question facing this struggle in next few hours. Will we sit back and watch as bill is passed in pieces? #wiunion

IMO we should push for no cuts at all. The rich can pay for this crisis. Make the Koch bros pay! #wiunion
22 Feb

But the economic aspect is just as impt. So many workers saying they can’t afford to pay bills if their benefits get cut #wiunion

Many activists and union leaders are pushing line: this is about taking away ppl’s rights. We’ll take any cuts you want. #wiunion
22 Feb

Which would mean no collective bargaining, but you might get it back in 2013. In other words, total BS. #wiunion
